Sublingual Immunotherapy (SLIT) in California, Oregon & Washington
If you suffer from food or environmental allergies, simple tasks like going outside or eating at a restaurant can put you in potentially life-threatening harm. With sublingual immunotherapy, patients can gradually build up their tolerances to triggering allergens over time, allowing them to eventually lead normal, allergic reaction-free lives.
Columbia Asthma & Allergy Clinic is proud to provide patients with a comprehensive selection of allergy treatments. If you’d like more information about sublingual immunotherapy, oral immunotherapy, or any of our other treatments options, contact us today to schedule a consultation appointment.
What is Sublingual Immunotherapy?
Like oral immunotherapy, sublingual immunotherapy can help decrease or eliminate the allergic reactions of individuals suffering from either food or environmental allergies. Like oral immunotherapy, this is done by gradually exposing the patient to increasing amounts of the allergen over time. While this allergen is ingested orally during oral immunology, it is placed under the tongue during sublingual immunotherapy. Significantly smaller amounts of the allergen are administered during sublingual immunotherapy, with beginning doses being measured in a matter of micrograms. These doses can be administered either in a tablet or liquid form.
This treatment can be used to address food as well as environmental allergies. Sublingual immunotherapy is currently available through pharmaceutical companies in tablet form to treat dust mite, ragweed and grass pollen allergies. We at Columbia Asthma and Allergy are using commercially available as well as in-house custom extracts of different allergens in liquid form to address environmental and food allergies. Hundreds of patients have received this form of treatment safely with good improvement of their allergies.
Am I a Candidate for Sublingual Immunotherapy?
Because sublingual immunotherapy uses extremely small doses of allergens, it can be safely administered to both adults and children. It’s important for patients to be aware that while the beneficial effects of sublingual immunotherapy are apparent within weeks, the treatment may need to continue for three to five years to achieve sustained benefit. Before beginning a sublingual immunotherapy treatment, patients must first undergo an allergy test to confirm their specific allergy. During this consultation appointment, a member of our medical staff will also ask you questions about your individual condition. Using this information, they will help you decide which treatment is right for you.
Columbia Asthma & Allergy Clinic is proud to provide patients in California, Oregon, and Washington with the comprehensive allergy and asthma care they need to lead their healthiest, most productive lives.
