About Food Allergies
Food allergies are becoming more and more common. In fact, Food Allergy Research and Education (FARE) revealed nearly 32 million Americans are allergic to at least one food. Almost half of all children who have a food allergy are allergic to more than one food.
When a person has a food allergy, they break out when they consume that food. Typically, it’s the protein in the food that causes the reaction. When the reaction happens, a person may experience hives, diarrhea, nausea, or vomiting. In more serious cases, the person’s throat may swell. He or she could have difficulty breathing, low blood pressure, or a weak pulse. Fainting is possible as well.
The first part of your appointment consists of us asking questions about your medical history. We obtain information about any symptoms of allergies you’re experiencing. Our physician will want to know about the severity of the allergies as well as any insight you have about your allergies. Additionally, we inquire about any medical conditions you have in addition to your allergies.
Food Allergy Testing
We might conduct a skin allergy test. The process doesn’t take long, and once we start the test, we can read the results within about 15 to 20 minutes. During a scratch test, our physician applies a solution consisting of your allergen. To ensure it causes a reaction, we scratch the surface of your skin to allow it to seep into your skin. Once we do this, we read the results in about 20 minutes after we apply the allergen extract. Sometimes, we perform the intradermal test, which consists of our physician injecting a potential allergen under your skin. In about 15 minutes, our allergy specialist looks at the area to see if you had a reaction.
We can evaluate if you’re allergic to any preservatives in foods by using a patch test. Our allergist applies patches. In about 48 hours, we look to see if you any reaction where the patches were.
A blood test is another type of allergy test we can utilize. During this type of test, we take a sample of your blood and check to see if has any of the antibodies that are produced when you come in contact with an allergy.
Additionally, we can perform elimination or challenge tests. If you have an elimination test, our physician will ask you to stop eating a certain food for a short period of time. Then, we’ll see if you’re still having a reaction. If you’re still having an allergic reaction, we ask you to stop eating another food. If the reaction stops, we know that’s your allergen. If it doesn’t stop, we continue to eliminate foods in your diet.
A challenge test happens in our office. We ask you to eat a small portion of a food that’s a potential allergen. After you do, we see if you had a reaction.
