What is Food Allergy Desensitization?
When a person is diagnosed with a food allergy, it means that they have some sort of sensitivity to a specific food that can cause some sort of reaction, mild or severe. Food allergy desensitization involves building up an immunity to the food that the patient is experiencing reactions to. The goal of food allergy desensitization is to eliminate the body’s reaction to the food.
What is an example of a Food Allergy Desensitization?
An example of a successful allergy desensitization would be the following scenario:
After testing, a patient is diagnosed with a severe peanut allergy. They are advised to stay away from all peanuts, and to always carry an EpiPen autoinjector, because airborne traces of peanut may also trigger a reaction. The provider recommends Oral Immunotherapy (OIT) for their peanut allergy. The patient’s goal is to be able to safely eat peanuts in large quantities (as opposed to just being safe from small quantities of peanuts). After 8 months of OIT, the patient has successfully finished the OIT peanut protocol, and are now a proud OIT graduate of Columbia Asthma and Allergy Clinic. They can now safely eat peanuts, and in order to maintain their peanut immunity, the patient is now advised to keep peanuts in their regular diet.
How do you desensitize to foods?
Columbia Asthma and Allergy Clinic is one of the few clinics in the world that has the ability to desensitize patients to their food allergies. Dr. Sanjeev Jain, MD, PhD is the first to desensitize a patient to multiple nuts at the same time, and also the first to desensitize a patient to shellfish. Dr. Jain’s protocols have been extensively tested and CAAC has had hundreds of successful OIT graduates in the last 10 years. The two immunotherapy options that CAAC uses for food allergy desensitization are:
- Oral Immunotherapy (OIT)
- Sublingual Immunotherapy (SLIT)
If you are interested in CAAC because of our food allergy desensitization options, please schedule an appointment with one of our clinic locations that offer these services. If you call any of our clinics, we can help set you up with a clinic that is best suited to accommodate your needs.
