What is Environmental Allergen Desensitization?
Environmental (also known as “inhalant”) allergies are very common. Typical environmental allergens include pollen, trees, grasses, dust mites, cats, and dogs. Much like food allergy desensitization, environmental allergen desensitization involves introducing concentrations of the patient’s allergens into the body. At first, the concentrations are extremely diluted, and then the concentrations are increased with each dose, until maintenance is reached. When maintenance is reached, the patient will experience significantly reduced reaction symptoms. The act of reducing the symptoms of an allergic reaction to environmental allergens is environmental allergen desensitization.
How does Columbia Asthma and Allergy Clinic achieve Environmental Allergen Desensitization?
Since it is nearly impossible to completely avoid environmental allergens, Columbia Asthma and Allergy Clinic has a few different options to desensitize patients with severe environmental allergen reactions. These options include the following: Subcutaneous Immunotherapy (SCIT) – these are also known as “Allergy Shots” Sublingual Immunotherapy (SLIT) to Inhalants Intralymphatic Immunotherapy (ILIT) – these involve 3 injections into the lymph node every 4 weeks (not covered by insurance)
