Can you cure me of allergies?
Unfortunately, there is no known cure for allergies. An allergy occurs when your body overreacts to an innocuous substance known as an allergen. This allergen can be present as a food, environmental substance, or medication. While we cannot completely eradicate your allergies, we can help you “train” your body to control its response to them so your symptoms can be reduced and in some cases, even eliminated.
Depending on the nature of your allergy and the particular allergen(s) involved, we may be able to perform desensitization treatments. During these sessions which can take place over several months, we will gradually introduce your body to increasing amounts of the allergens to help you build tolerance in a safe and controlled manner. Over time, the goal will be marked improvement in quality of life and reduction severity of your symptoms. The decision to pursue treatment is very individualized and encompasses many factors, and our providers will assist you in making the best choice for managing your symptoms optimally during your initial consultation.
Can I get a rhinoscopy at Columbia Asthma & Allergy Clinic in Oakland, CA?
Yes, you can! This unique procedure allows our allergists to get a closer look at your nasal passages and surrounding areas. We can visually inspect your vocal cords, throat, sputum, and sinuses. We look for any blockages, polyps, or structural defects that could be affecting you or amplifying your allergies.
A rhinoscopy is also used to treat medical issues in these areas. These thin, flexible tubes can perform many complicated tasks. These include draining fluids, opening up blockages, applying antibiotics, or even removing polyps. This procedure is just one of the tools available to our allergists at our facility.
How do you test for allergies?
There are several ways to test for allergies in a controlled setting. Many doctors use a “prick test” or take blood samples for testing. While those are available at our facility, we also have a more noninvasive testing method available: Patch Testing. Instead of pricking your skin or taking blood to be tested, we apply a small patch to your skin containing the allergen. After several days of exposure, we check your skin for any reaction. If we find a bump, that generally indicates you are allergic to something.
