Allergy Clinic Near Portland, OR

If you’re dealing with seasonal allergies or have a child with a food allergy, you may want to visit an allergy clinic. Rather than medications that only provide temporary relief, our clinic uses methods that target your immune system – the source of your allergies. At Columbia Asthma & Allergy Clinic, serving Portland, OR and the general vicinity, our team of allergy specialists may determine your allergies and use immunotherapy to rid you of your allergy symptoms on a long-term basis.

Diagnostics Provided by an Allergy Clinic

In a majority of cases, our patients come to us knowing they have an allergy. They’re not always sure of what they’re allergic to, though. Whether you know your allergies or not, our allergist can help. We use one of the following to determine your allergens:

  • Prick test
  • Scratch test
  • Patch test
  • Elimination test
  • Challenge test

We perform one of two skin tests. During the first type, we apply a substance and scratch your skin. The other skin test consists of our allergist pricking your skin with a possible allergen. If you have a patch test, we apply your allergen to small squares of material and place them on your skin. Forty-eight hours afterward, you visit our office for our allergist to evaluate the sites. An elimination test consists of our allergist removing a potential allergen from your diet or routine until you no longer have a reaction. On the other hand, a challenge test requires you to consume a small amount of a substance, and then we monitor you for a reaction.

All of these allergy tests, except for the patch test, are conducted entirely in our office. This helps us monitor you for any adverse effects and intervene if necessary. We even perform allergy testing on children, which can benefit them in the future.

Treatments Provided by an Allergy Clinic

An allergist can prescribe methods that target the root of the problem, rather than just manage your symptoms. Since your body’s immune system is responding to an allergy, our allergy specialist targets your immune system. Ultimately, our treatments expose your body to your allergen in controlled dosages that continually increase. Eventually, your body recognizes the allergen and no longer responds or only responds slightly. We may provide you with immunotherapy either orally or subcutaneously.

Generally, you don’t experience severe side effects since you only receive small doses of your allergen. Those who have a reaction may develop any of the following:

  • Redness, swelling, or irritation at the injection site
  • Hives
  • Chest tightness
  • Wheezing
  • Runny nose
  • Itchy eyes
  • Shortness of breath

After your immunotherapy, we ask you to stay at our office for about 30 minutes to monitor you for side effects.

Why Choose Us

We take a unique approach to allergy relief when compared to a general practitioner. Our allergist focus on the cause of the problem, so you no longer have to practice avoidance, require a medication, or always have to carry epinephrine. We understand that every patient is unique, so we always tailor each treatment plan to the specific needs of the patient. At our office, each schedule we create for immunotherapy increases at a rate based on the patient’s response. Regularly, we work with children, so we know how to speak to them in a manner that eases their minds. Not to mention, we genuinely care about the health and wellness of our patients.
