Do you do patch testing at your allergy clinic?
Patch testing is available at our allergy clinic and is an excellent alternative to skin prick testing for allergies. We will use specially designed patches to expose your skin to specific allergens that may cause an allergic reaction. This reaction is limited to your skin and will tell our doctors if your body is allergic to something. These patches will test for a variety of irritants found both at work or home. The patches will need to remain on your skin, exposing it to the allergen, for about two weeks before definitive results are available.
Can you help with my environmental allergies or food allergies?
Columbia Asthma & Allergy offers both environmental and food allergen desensitization treatments. Many people are allergic to something, whether it be a specific food or something in the environment like pollen, cats, or dogs. To treat you for these allergies, a small amount of diluted allergens will be introduced to your body. As your body becomes more tolerated to it, we will increase the amount, and over time your body will increase its tolerance of the allergen. This tolerance will help make your symptoms more manageable and less severe. In some cases, symptoms may even be thoroughly repressed!
Desensitization treatments have been found to be highly effective in treating allergies, although it is a slow process. For the safety of the patient, they cannot be rushed.
Is Rhinoscopy available at your clinic?
If you need a doctor to examine the areas around your nasal passages carefully, then you need a rhinoscopy. Our allergy specialists have years of experience with his procedure, which involves visually examining your throat, septum, sinuses and vocal cords. We look for a variety of things that could be giving you problems such as blockages, polyps, and structural defects.
What are some other conditions you can test for at Columbia Asthma & Allergy?
There are several breathing conditions we can screen and test you for at our clinic. They include:
- Pulmonary fibrosis
- Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
- Chronic bronchitis
We use spirometry to screen you for these conditions. This diagnostic test measures the functions of your lung, measuring the Forced Vital Capacity (FVC) and Forced Expiratory Volume (FEC). An FVC records the amount of air you can exhale while an FEV measures how much you can exhale in one second.
