Do you do patch testing at your clinic?
Yes, we do! Some allergy testing involves needles or the pricking of the skin, which can be very uncomfortable. Patch testing avoids that by using patches designed to expose the skin to certain irritants that may cause an allergic reaction. These irritants can be found at home or work. Small patches enclose the skin containing these irritants and remain there for two weeks until they are analyzed.
Can you help with my environmental allergies or food allergies?
Our allergy clinic offers environmental allergen desensitization treatments. Being allergic to environmental irritants is very common. These allergens include pollen, grasses, dust mites, cats, dogs, and trees. We will introduce small amounts of allergens to your body, very diluted at first. We will then increase the dosage over time until you become less allergic to the allergen to the point where it is manageable. The goal is to reduce your allergic reaction to it and hopefully lessen your symptoms.
Our allergy specialists use the same method when patients are allergic to certain foods. This is done in a controlled, safe setting and you are continuously monitored by our doctors to ensure your safety. Desensitization treatments have proven to be highly effective in treating environmental and food allergies by building your body’s tolerance up to specific allergens.
Is Rhinoscopy available at your clinic?
Yes, we can take a closer look at your areas around your nasal passages, also known as Rhinoscopy. During this procedure, we will visually examine your sinuses, throat, septum, and vocal cords. Our allergy specialists will look for a variety of things that could be causing you problems including polyps, structural defects, and blockages.
What are some other conditions you can test for at Columbia Asthma & Allergy?
At our allergy clinic, we can test you for several breathing conditions including pulmonary fibrosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma, emphysema, and chronic bronchitis. We will use a diagnostic test called spirometry. It measures the function of your lungs, and the data is analyzed to look for signs of these conditions. During the test, we will look for two different values: forced vital capacity (FVC) and forced expiratory volume (FEV). FVC measures the amount of air you can exhale while the FEV look at how much you can exhale in one second.
